Before You Leave Your Present Address

  • Read gas meter – electric meter – water meter
  • Cancel telephone – milk and other home deliveries – diaper service – newspaper delivery
  • Have your refrigerator and other appliances serviced for the move
  • Write to the utility company in the city to which you are moving. Ask them about necessary fees or deposits required for installation of services
  • Inform the utility companies (gas, electric, water and telephone) with information where you will want final bills to be mailed.
  • Send your forwarding address to your local post office and send change of address cards to magazines, insurance companies, friends and stores.
  • Transfer your fire insurance on household goods or other insurance on personal possessions, so they will be covered at your new home and en route.
  • Notify the principal of your children’s school about your intended move. Get letter from him/her covering the status of your children in school.
  • Notify pastor of your church you are leaving
  • Obtain birth records and baptism records of all the children
  • Get medical records of shots, eyeglass prescriptions, etc.
  • Transfer your checking and savings accounts
  • Have your present bank arrange credit references for establishing new accounts in the city to which you are moving
  • Arrange for sufficient cash or travelers checks to cover the cost of moving services and expenses until you make banking connections in the city to which you are moving. Cash or certified check is generally required by the moving company
  • Leave keys for your old property with your Realtor or neighbors
  • Leave your abstract or title policy information with your attorney or realtor

At Your New Address

  • Obtain certified check or cashiers check necessary for closing
  • Check on service of telephone -gas – electricity – water
  • Have your range serviced check pilot light (if gas)
  • Check pilot light on hot water heater, incinerator and furnace
  • Have refrigerator -automatic washer – television set checked
  • Ask postman for mail he may be holding for your arrival
  • Have new address recorded on driver’s license
  • Visit city offices and register for voting
  • Register car within five days after arrival in state.
  • Register family in your new place of worship
